Nineteen tales of horror, mystery, supernatural suspense, and the weird West. A horde of insects invade one unfortunate man's stomach and make it their home, a blind woman guards a cavern full of Civil War-era zombies, and a troubled teen digs up her father's corpse, hoping to get some closure. Visit a macabre secret museum where taxidermy and classic literature combine, discover the lengths one desperate mortuary assistant will go to for love, and learn why Jack McCall really killed Wild Bill Hickcok. "Adrian Ludens...will scare the hell outta you in Bedtime Stories for Carrion Beetles. I highly recommend anything Ludens writes!" -Ty Schwamberger (The Fields, Deep Dark Woods). "Understated, wistful, and somewhat sad. Bedtime Stories for Carrion Beetles was a creepy pleasant surprise, and I am looking forward to seeing more of his work. -K. H. Vaughan, Hellnotes

Bedtime Stories for Carrion Beetles Adrian Ludens 9781463722661 Books

As a longtime fan of the horror-sf-fantasy genre, and a recent acquaintance of the author, I'd like to offer a solid thumbs-up recommendation that you buy and own "Bedtime Stories For Carrion Beetles" by Adrian 'Gunner' Ludens.

Any fan of the genre should respond to the vibe given off by this collection of thrillers. Mr. Ludens pays appropriate homage to the great writers of the pulp fan magazine days as well as the top writers of today by creating this unique set of thrillrides. He delivers a fine selection of scary tales, dark excursions and shifting vistas, each with a payoff that raises the hairs on your neck.

While I enjoyed all the stories, I was personally drawn to two of the longer history-based tales in the collection. "You Don't Know Jack" is a harrowing journey through western gunslinger legend and myth, while "The Restoration Room" begins as a haunting antebellum gothic, and becomes a ghost story of the deep south that stays with you long after you've read it.

And the stories "There's No Word For It" and "Waiting For Inspiration" are two of the most rollicking absurdist rides that any story has ever taken me on.

This is the first collection of tales I've read by this imaginative author, and allow me to say, it's a pleasure to hear the writer's voice so clearly. Having read a number of different top authors, and a the great body of work of a choice few, I'm minded of the importance of the consistency of "voice" in writing. Surveying an author's total output, it's instructive to track their journey toward mastering their art, and marking the strength of their writing 'voice' along the way.

Here there is most definitely a clear, steady and solid voice, with the promise of yet stronger works to come. Well done, Mr Ludens, and keep the fire burning.

Bedtime Stories for Carrion Beetles Adrian Ludens 9781463722661 Books Reviews

When you read the title of this book, what is the first thing that pops into your mind? My first thought was "That is a hell of a title, and I want to read this book!" This should be your initial reaction as well. BEDTIME STORIES FOR CARRION BEETLES is a collection of 19 short stories from author Adrian Ludens; most of these tales would be classified as horror, although there is a steampunk story and a couple of simply quirky ones as well. But regardless of how their classified, these short stories will no doubt entertain every reader that ventures into them.

I'm curious as to how the author came up with such a vivid and unique title. It certainly catches the eye (and the brain). It is also a very accurate description for the tales in this collection. I would wager that other flesh-devouring insects (and creatures, for that matter) might enjoy these as well.

The stories in BEDTIME STORIES FOR CARRION BEETLES are all written well and exemplify a master-craftsman at work. It is very apparent that Ludens is well-studied in the art of short story writing, as his tales are all succinct and flow easily. He does embellish with unnecessary prose, but instead gets right to the point.

One of my favorite stories is "A Good Game". This tale is mentioned in the above description, however I'm not going to tell you which one it is. This is a wickedly fun story, and I actually smiled as I read the end of it. I am impressed with the originality, not to mention the story itself.

Another favorite is "Solitary Man". In this one, a prison guard is telling his comatose son a story about work, particularly about a jailed writer. Things are not what they seem to be for this best-selling prisoner, and the final sentence in this story will definitely give you a chill.

BEDTIME STORIES FOR CARRION BEETLES is an excellent short story collection, and it is one that every fan of horror literature will want to own. Be sure and give this one a look. It is available now, on and the author's website, in a variety of formats.
This series of short stories is definitely not bedtime reading; however, be prepared for twists at the end. It's a wild ride!
Mr. Ludens preys on the readers fears, weaving stories that allow the reader's imagine to assist in frightening the reader.
Adrian is one of my favorite suspense/horror writers!
This was the first book of his I have read, and I since purchased Gruesome Faces, Ghastly Places. Any more books and/or short stories he does, on my app it goes!
I chose this title because I am a South Dakota native and I love horror stories. This collection did not disappoint. The writing is reminiscent of Joe Hill, son of Stephen King, though the stories did not have the surprise drop off endings I find so annoying in Mr. Hill's work. I am looking forward to reading more from Mr. Ludens soon!
I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of nineteen short stories and highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dark-edged fiction and a gallows sense of humor. Matter of fact, I bought the version too so I could read it on my Nook and Droid. All these stories are great reading and cover a wide range of characters, time, and place. I first read "You Don't Know Jack" in another collection of stories, 'Granite Island, Amber Sea,' and it stood out as one of the best in that collection so I sought out 'Bedtime Stories for Carrion Beetles.' I'm glad I did and I look forward to reading more from this writer.
